Last week's roadside encounters

I stop for nature pictures.
This past week I stopped along the road to snap this picture of a soaring bald eagle.

Just a few hours ago I pulled off to the side of the road to watch this feeding black bear.

Earlier this week, we noticed this snapping turtle along a dirt road.  The road was way up on a hill.
The snapper was rather far from water, but I don't think it was planning to hitchhike.

Although it sure was carrying some hitchhikers.

I built a good sized pond some years ago.  An amazing amount of wildlife quickly sprang to life in it. Obviously, hitchhiking is one method pond dwellers use to colonize new territory.

 Snappers are nasty looking, eh?

Okay, enough of the snapper.
How about a snapshot of a roadside bog?

 Would you drive past?
I must say, it was quite a hike to the far end, but there is some "really cool stuff" happening in the bogs right now!

  1. Dana, do you have an awesome zoom lens or was the bear that close ? Amazing to see a bear from the road.

How could I drive by that bog now you've taught us what is dwelling there !

  2. nice capture on the slugs hitchhiking on the turtle

  3. Sybil,
The bear was way across a creek. I have a Nikon 3100 with a 55 to 300mm zoom, so it borders on awesome!

Thanks! I didn't look real close (yuck), but I think those hitchhikers might be leeches.
