Eastern Box Turtle

An eastern box turtle stopped by our place recently.
Eastern Box Turtle
The box turtle is an armored land turtle that can close up its shell for protection.  In the photo below, the box turtle has just lowered the front lobe of its hinged plastron to stick its head out and see if all is clear.
My camera was apparently not to threatening because the turtle stuck its neck out of its protecting armor.
The box turtle looked around a bit and decided it was tired of posing, so it left.

  1. What a cute post. I love turtles. Anyhoo.

Great photos. Can't wait to show my children when they wake up. ;)

    Happy 4th to you all.

  2. Your camera may not have been threatening Dana, but were't you with it ? :-)

So their shells have a hinge that moves at the front ? I just thought they tucked their head and legs inside and didn't realize they had this extra protection.
